PLAYER PROFILE
Born: May 5, 1992 Height: 6’1” Weight: 205 Shoots: Left
Though Sam was born in Vancouver, B. C. he grew up in Coquitlam where he first played lacrosse at age 4, inspired by his father Steve who played lacrosse through Junior. He says, “I played all of my minor, Intermediate and Junior lacrosse in Coquitlam and still play with some of those guys.” He brings athleticism, intensity, intelligence and great tenacity to his role as a leader on defense. In three years with the Junior A Adanacs, including the Minto Cup appearances in 2012 and 2013, Sam played in 67 games, scoring two goals (both in the playoffs in 2013) with 6 assists plus 160 PiM. His WLA stats through last season include one goal and five assists (two last summer in an offensive breakout season) for six points and 28 PiM in 52 games. Selected by the Adanacs early in the WLA draft in 2014, he says, “I’m very glad to be playing for the Senior Adanacs which I’ve been watching my whole life.” Sam played hockey – “every position except goal” – till grade 10 and recently took up golf (though he’s a year older, he is not yet at Jordan Speith’s level). He also enjoys hiking, boating and ocean fishing. Sam listens to “classic 90s rock” and names “Poets” by The Tragically Hip as his favourite song. He is a huge fan of movies, with favourites being “Apocalypse Now” and, from childhood, “Jurassic Park”. As for TV, he has in his film library all the seasons of “The Simpsons”. Sam completed his fourth year in Engineering at BCIT and now works at Abbotsford concrete products as a millwright. He added, “I’m single and not looking lol.” (That won’t last, now that the word is out, eh ladies?) Asked to name the people most influential in his lacrosse career, in addition to his father, Sam named former captain of the Adanacs, the Toronto Rock, Team Canada and the only defenseman so far selected as an NLL All-Star (and certainly deserving of his induction in 2017 into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame) Pat Coyle, adding, “Watching him play is the reason I play defense and one of the reasons I wanted to be an Adanac.”
